Final NanoDefine Outreach Event: project successfully completed and outcome presented!
NanoDefine is approaching the end of the project (31 October 2017). By assessing a wide spectrum of test materials from more simple monotype to complex poly-disperse matrices with different shapes, structures and compositio ns, including real-world materials, such as industrial or consumer products, the performance of existing key measurement techniques (MTs) was critically evaluated, improved and further developed, and validated.

This was achieved by a comprehensive method testing and comparison campaign resulting in a measurement strategy that can be used to reliably classify particulate materials according to the EC recommendation for the definition of nanomaterial (2011/696/EU).
The new measurement strategy developed by NanoDefine mainly consists of two main pillars: (1) a novel 2-tiered approach involving rapid and cost-effective screening methods and confirmatory methods (for more complex materials), and (2) a unique decision support system, the NanoDefiner e-Tool integrating the established methodology and guiding potential users in method selection and final classification (nano or non-nano) of materials.
The outcome of the project and the most relevant MTs and tools developed have now been presented and demonstrated to relevant stakeholders during a 2-days Final Outreach Event taking place in Brussels on 19-20 September 2017.
More than 70 participants representing various end-users, such as material and instrument manufacturers, regulators, or policy-makers, joint the meeting and engaged in the lively discussions and exchange of expertise and experience with project experts on scope, applicability and limitations of the developed tools, in particular when using them to classify real-world materials.
The hands-on method demonstrations on day 2 provided a unique opportunity for participants to meet the experts behind the methods and to address more practical questions and considerations that may arise when implementing the EU nano-definition.
Most oral and poster presentations are publicly available here, together with a short video on interviews and impressions from this final meeting, which will be also soon available here.
